Anyone seen one of these before?

I am not usually one to try and catch flies, but this one caught my eye. I noticed him when I got home the other day sitting on our boat because he was big and colourful. I managed to catch it and photograph it without it flying away (he was a bit on the sluggish side). I love the colours and pattern on his back. I have never seen anything like this before.

Anyway, he was pretty good for a model for the fly variety - quite cool calm and collected.

Has anyone ever seen a fly like this one before??
